Cinder – Cyborg Cinderella Retelling

I love fairytale re-tellings. The idea of a Cinderella Cyborg was just too good to pass up! (And bonus points because it’s first draft was written during NaNoWriMo!)

11235712GOODREADS SUMMARY: Humans and androids crowd the raucous streets of New Beijing. A deadly plague ravages the population. From space, a ruthless lunar people watch, waiting to make their move. No one knows that Earth’s fate hinges on one girl.

Cinder, a gifted mechanic, is a cyborg. She’s a second-class citizen with a mysterious past, reviled by her stepmother and blamed for her stepsister’s illness. But when her life becomes intertwined with the handsome Prince Kai’s, she suddenly finds herself at the center of an intergalactic struggle, and a forbidden attraction. Caught between duty and freedom, loyalty and betrayal, she must uncover secrets about her past in order to protect her world’s future.

I loved this book! The setting was fascinating, and I loved how it deviated from the original Cinderella story we all know and love and put a whole new twist on every single detail (the carriage, the dress, the shoe).

I loved the character of Cinder (and Iko was too cute!). She was so rebellious, but she cared so much about Peony (one of her stepsisters). Cinder’s transformation during the course of the book was subtle, but she redefined her entire reason for being. I did see the big reveal at the end coming (it’s YA, it’s kinda predictable), but the lead-up was mind-blowing.

Let’s take a moment to look at Leveena. She’s the Lunar Queen/Ultimate Evil Villain in this series. Her powers are terrifying! She can make you see whatever she wants, do whatever she orders of you and generally just control everything (though it doesn’t work through computers/TV screens, etc.). I’m so excited to learn more about her and her evil plans to control all of Earth.

It’s refreshing to find a book that isn’t centered in the USA and uses a well known location like Beijing as it’s backdrop. I found that the world worked so well with that backdrop and the architecture and general feel for the world really made the story come alive.

About the Author: Marissa Meyer – I live in Tacoma, Washington, with my fiancé and our two cats. In addition to my slight obsession with books and writing, I’m big on road-tripping, wine-tasting, and hunting for antiques. I’m represented by Jill Grinberg.

CINDER, my debut novel, is a futuristic re-envisioning of Cinderella in which Cinder is a cyborg mechanic.
